A Step-by-Step Guide to Quitting Your Job Correctly It’s normal to feel conflicted when it comes to quitting a job. All of these emotions are perfectly natural, and you–and the people you’re leaving–will be great! Especially if you obey these guidelines for resigning without creating a rift: 1. Notify your direct manager. Your exit would have a significant impact on your bosses. They should hear the news from you rather than hearing it from anyone else. It’s also important to keep in mind that you may use them as a guide in the future, so don’t let a bad goodbye be the last thing they remember. 2. Explain to your direct manager why you are leaving. Keep it optimistic by expressing what excites you about the new opportunity instead of asking your manager why you want to resign. 3. Give at least 2 weeks’ notice period. The normal notice to send an employer before leaving is two weeks. If you’ve signed an employment contract, though, make sure you’re following any notice requirements. 4. Offer to assist in finding a replacement You are the best at what you do, and you might have the best idea of what skills are needed. While you’re still around, volunteer to help write the job description, screen applicants, and perform interviews. 5. Make a list of all of your current duties and responsibilities. Create a list of what you do regularly, monthly, and annually based on the projects you worked on in the previous year. List them out so there is a record of what needs to be done in the future. 6. Approach your last days with empathy Although this is an exciting time for you, the rest of your team will be under pressure to take up the slack and train your replacement. Your gain is their loss, so don’t make it obvious.
